Hi Everyone! Here is another reply to your email. Pauleen Luna shares her thoughts. Read on!.
PAULEEN J. LUNA could not believe her luck when she was offered to join showbiz during one of the workshops under the helm of MS. BEVERLY VERGEL
What the 13 year old did not know, was that she was destined to be a star. Pauleen had that “X factor” charm that made her standout in a crowd. She had a symmetrically beautiful face, perfectly white teeth and a radiantly glowing silky smooth skin. Her beauty stood-out in person, in print and on video, both with make-up and especially without.
It was no wonder that even before she joined showbiz, Pauleen was already a familiar face in television commercials and print advertisements.
Pauleen literally grew-up before our eyes in and out of the training rooms. She would perform with energy, commitment and passion from the smallest roles to the most challenging performances in all her workshops. Her innocence, “fresh” appeal, “gullibility,” sincerity and happy disposition endeared her to her audience.
Pauleen became a fixture on TV portraying various teen roles. As she grew-up in the business, Pauleen shed off the baby fat and blossomed into a curvaceous foxy lady that still had that youthful glow, childlike innocence and giggles. She was an adolescent at heart, inside a blossoming woman’s body. Pauleen soon became an eye candy to men, celebrities, politicians and professionals alike.
Pauleen did not have to be the proverbial “CLARA,” the ultimate villain of the 90’s epic hit “MARA CLARA,” to have her share of intrigues and “frenemies” in the business. With all that she is, and all that she is blessed with, Pauleen attracted admirers… as well as detractors. The yin and yang, the good and bad that goes with success, beauty and a celebrity status.
Pauleen did not have strong connections, no “backer,” no relations nor did she produce her own shows just to get herself into showbiz. She also did not have special accommodations in the workshop. Much was demanded of her, and she delivered and gave it all she’s got. All that Pauleen had was herself… and all that she needed was already inside her. A self-made woman and a star in her own right… PAULEEN LUNA.
Here are PAULEEN’s thoughts to share:
ACTING CHALLENGES THAT A NEWBIE WILL ENCOUNTER:
Acting in your first project. – No matter how simple the role or how short the exposure, there is excitement and anxiety of being the new kid on the block. The set, crew, staff, work pace, the actors you only get to see on TV, can be intimidating and overwhelming for a first time actor. When that happens, try to recover from the embarrassment as fast as you can and try get it right the second time around.
Everything that is not you or is new to you.
Character, Personality, Age, Professions, Experience, Emotion
Prepare for your role. Study, understand and immerse yourself until you become the character.
Portraying roles in a period picture.
Interacting with seasoned co-actors.
Respectable senior or veteran actors – They are so focused, prepared, intense and professional.
Make sure to prepare well for your scenes with them.
At 18 years old, I stepped out of my family’s comfort zone and took on a challenging role as a 1970’s-80’s bold star who had 3 failed marriages, each man leaving her with a child. She was on her 4th relationship when her fiancée dies. I gave it all I’ve got and much more. That role won for me a tie with respected veteran actress Ms. Gina Pareno, for the Best Single Performance by an Actress Award by the PMPC Star Awards for Television.
WHAT ROLES HAVE YOU PORTRAYED? DO NEWBIES GET TO DO A VARIETY OF ROLES TOO?
Hmm... I've done pretty much everything. Bida, Kontrabida, Comedy, Drama, Action, Fantasy. That depends on what the producer sees in you. As a newcomer, you are usually given light roles and short exposures at first. The roles become meatier as the producers become confident of your capability.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM ROLE? DO NEWBIES EVENTUALLY GET TO DO THEIR DREAM ROLE?
My dream role now is to be DARNA! Or a VAMPIRE. To get your dream role as a newbie? --- Hmm… You are very lucky!
AS A CELEBRITY, HAVE YOU HAD EMBARRASSING MOMENTS? HOW DID YOU DEAL WITH IT?
I was walking the ramp in a live TV show when my elaborate costume got tangled with another model causing me to fall on my knees, right in front of the camera for all the world to see. That was really embarrassing!... and televised pa! Accidents happen. Get-up and move-on. And try not to trip on your way out.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE:
I am a self-confessed Eat Bulaga fan. I grew up watching the show. I never thought I’d see them every day, be with them, eat with them, talk to them and joke around with them. The experience was surreal. Tito Vic and Joey were the most grounded, generous, kind, caring and real people I’ve met. No wonder, the cast, staff, crew and their audience have remained loyal to EAT BULAGA. Once you’re in, you’d never want to get out. I always look forward to each day with EAT BULAGA and DABARKADS. It’s my home. It’s my showbiz family.
THREE THINGS PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT PAULEEN:
- I am simple
- I am a fighter. I do not easily give-up.
- I put God first and everything else follows.
ANY LOW MOMENTS IN YOUR CAREER?
That time when I was transferring to GMA from ABS-CBN was the lowest point of my career. Yes, GMA welcomed me, but I was not sure of what will happen next. At first, everything was new to me that I felt like I was starting all over again.
WHO IS THE PAULEEN THAT THE PUBLIC DOES NOT KNOW?
I am simple girl with big dreams. I will not wait for magic to happen. I will make it happen!
HOW DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO REMEMBER YOU?
I have a very good relationship with the staff, crew and people I work with. I would like them to remember me as I am. Always happy, always jolly, always “bungisngis” and I love that they appreciate it.
YOUR ADVICE TO THOSE WHO DREAM OF ENTERING SHOWBIZ?
Based on my experience, “PAKIKISAMA” is very important. Always remember, the people you see on your way up are the same people you will meet on your way down. Treat everyone (staff, crew, artists, the public) equally. Believe me, it feels right, it feels good!
AIM HIGH, DREAM BIG AND WORK HARD.
Do not stop until you get what you want. Always do your best. There is no halfway. It has to be all the way and you have to give it all you’ve got.
WHAT IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS?
REALITIES IN SHOWBIZ THAT PEOPLE DO NOT REALLY KNOW?
It can be a really crazy world – Many things happen that do not even get written about.
It is NOT AT ALL EASY to be an actress – Hard work, patience, tolerance, diligence and perseverance.
Actors have feelings too – They feel the same emotions as everyone else does.
The roles that actors portray are just roles. The role does not become the actor.
NOT ALL rumors are true – They could be hearsay, misquoted message, quoted out of context, a personal assumption or someone’s perception.
IF YOU HAD THE POWER AND OPPORTUNITY TO CHANGE THINGS IN SHOWBIZ, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
That everyone can all be friends. – Cat fights are stressful and senseless.
To get real. Be civil or stay neutral rather than do exactly the opposite and be plastic.
To co-exist in an environment of friendly competition.
ACTING TIPS TO "NEWBIES?"
Acting is REACTING. Learn to listen and feel.
There's no business like show business. Despite all the intrigues and the downsides of it, we do have fun. There are lots of perks and advantages when you are in showbiz.
Remember that you are the same person before and after showbiz. Meaning just like anybody, you can sometimes be weak, sensitive and can also get hurt. That experience can be magnified in showbiz since your private life now becomes public conversation.
An actor is like a fish in an aquarium. Eyes are on you. What you do and do not do, gets noticed.
I am thankful to God for all my blessings and for giving me a very supportive and loving family. I am thankful to those who support and believe in me. To those who chose to see the good, those who chose to give the benefit of the doubt and those who simply chose to trust…. I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am a happy soul… and I will continue to be so.
